Do I need a credit card to start the free trial?

No. The free trial requires only an account, with no payment details. You get a fully functional server for 24 hours. When the trial ends the server stops, but your files are kept so you can upgrade to a paid plan and pick up where you left off.
One trial per account for the lifetime of the account. To try a different game, upgrade your existing trial to a paid plan first.
