Why UK server location matters for Garry's Mod hosting
The Garry's Mod community in the UK is overwhelmingly UK and EU players. Routing that traffic through US datacenters adds latency that is noticeable in-game. This post covers why location matters for GMod specifically, where our hardware actually is, and the UK node we're bringing online.
Server location is one of those specs that hosting companies list without explaining why it matters. For some games it barely does. For Garry's Mod, particularly DarkRP, it matters more than most.
Where our hardware is
Update: this section originally said our servers were hosted only in Germany, not the UK. That's no longer accurate - we've since brought a real UK (London) node online alongside our Hetzner Germany hardware, and it's carrying customer servers today.
Typical round-trip from UK cities to our Germany location:
- London: 15-25ms
- Manchester: 20-35ms
- Birmingham: 18-30ms
- Edinburgh: 25-40ms
Compare that to a US East Coast datacenter (100-120ms from the UK) or US West Coast (150-180ms). The difference is not subtle. Once our London node is live for customer servers, UK players will see single-digit latency instead.
Why it matters for DarkRP specifically
Garry's Mod uses a client-server model where the server is the authority on physics and game state. High latency does not just make movement feel sluggish - it causes specific gameplay problems:
Prop physics - props are simulated server-side and their positions are sent to clients. At high latency, prop interactions feel "laggy" in a way that is distinct from just slow movement. When you are trying to build a base or interact with props, 100ms of extra latency is immediately apparent.
Hit registration - DarkRP has PVP. Hit registration in Source engine games is handled with lag compensation, but the compensation has limits. Beyond roughly 100ms, players notice that shots that look like hits do not register, and shots that look like misses do.
Money printer and job timers - DarkRP runs server-side timers for income generation. The timers themselves are not latency-sensitive, but the UI feedback that tells players when timers tick is a client-side update from the server. At high latency the UI lags behind the actual state, which causes player confusion about when to collect.
What most cheap hosts do
Many budget game server hosts use US-based infrastructure and offer "UK" plans that actually route traffic through transatlantic links. The server binary runs in a US datacenter; UK players connect across the Atlantic. The listed location is either the billing region or a CDN node, not the game server hardware.
This is worth checking before purchasing. The relevant question is: where is the physical machine running the srcds process? Not where the company is registered, and not where the control panel is hosted.
Is Germany good enough?
For the vast majority of UK GMod players, yes. Sub-30ms latency is within the range where DarkRP plays normally. The prop physics, hit registration, and timer feedback issues described above start becoming noticeable above roughly 60-80ms, and pronounced above 100ms.
If you are hosting a server specifically for players in Asia or the Americas alongside UK players, the latency spread will be large regardless of where the hardware sits. For a UK-primary community, a German datacenter is a practical choice.
